At St. Francis Xavier, we are honored to partner with parents as they help their children grow in faith and prepare to receive the Sacraments. Sacramental preparation is a joyful journey that deepens a child’s relationship with Jesus and strengthens their connection to our parish community.
In accordance with the Diocese of Gaylord, Sacramental Preparation is a three-year process designed to help children and families grow in their understanding and practice of the Catholic faith. For students attending St. Francis Xavier School, preparation is also incorporated into the school day.
Year 1: Growing in Faith at Home
Typically completed in first grade, Year 1 is our “At-Home Catechesis” year. Parents receive simple faith activities to complete with their child, including prayers to learn, Bible stories to read, and opportunities for family faith discussions. Most importantly, families are encouraged to attend Mass regularly and actively participate in the life of the parish. This year lays the foundation for a lifelong relationship with Christ.
Year 2: Preparing for Reconciliation
Typically completed in second grade, Year 2 focuses on the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Throughout the year, children learn about God’s mercy, forgiveness, and love as they prepare to celebrate their First Reconciliation during the season of Lent.
Parent faith formation also begins during this year. The Diocese of Gaylord requires parents of children preparing for the Sacraments to complete 15 hours of faith formation. These monthly gatherings provide an opportunity for parents to deepen their own faith while supporting their child’s spiritual journey. Attendance is tracked, and any missed sessions may be made up during Year 3.
Year 3: Confirmation and First Holy Communion
Typically completed in third grade, Year 3 is a special year of preparation for the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion. Through prayer, study, and participation in parish life, children grow in their understanding of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.
The journey culminates in the joyful celebration of Confirmation and First Holy Communion during the Easter season, usually in late April or May. These Sacraments mark an important milestone in a child’s faith life and strengthen their bond with Christ and His Church.
